About this piece

Nina is our merino gem this winter. In a small knitting workshop in Brno, we developed the cut, knitting style, wool weight, and seam details, and we are proud to present our first women's knitted sweater set from Brno. Its cut is versatile and timeless, perfect for winter as a second layer over dresses, shirts, or bamboo turtlenecks... In spring, it can be worn as an overcoat over a flowing shirt dress. The distinctive stand-up collar transitions into a shaped front edge, and the dropped-shoulder sleeves are slimmed down to fit nicely under a coat. The belt loops sewn into the seams are discreet, and the sweater can be worn with or without a belt. The timeless merino yarn has a subtle melange effect, giving the knit a beautiful multi-tonal look. The yarn has an extra-fine finish, which means it is resistant to pilling. It comes from Austria. A limited number of pieces have been produced. See the gallery below to find out how our sweater is made.

Making a YP sweater

It all starts here: laying out the pattern in the software. Pure pixel art :)

The program goes onto a Japanese knitting machine by floppy disk. A lovely piece from the nineties.

Spools of Superfine merino wool. It simply doesn't get any better!

sweaters merino Nina antracit – editorial photo

The bobbins of wool are threaded into the machine's guides. To a layman, a nuclear power plant control room, an Airbus cockpit and a knitting machine are equally baffling.

And off we go!

After knitting, every piece has to be steamed

So the fibres soften and hold their shape better

Straighten it, check everything is as it should be, and the sweater starts to take shape.

The knitting machine produces an almost finished piece, but some parts such as the neckline and armholes have to be trimmed by hand.

Merino is a very expensive material, so working with it takes a precise hand, a lot of experience and steady nerves. Measure twice, cut once.

And now the sewing! In this case on a machine similar to the one we use in our workshop for dresses and t-shirts.

What does this machine have in common with Moravian plum brandy?

sweaters merino Nina antracit – editorial photo

It makes chains! In Moravia plenty of people can handle a glass of plum brandy, but only skilled hands can handle a linking machine. The workshop owner sighs that there are no schools for it any more and interest in handcraft is fading.

Stitch by stitch... aiming precisely so the pieces of the sweater join up perfectly.

We visit the workshop regularly and discuss every pattern and every adjustment.

Wool is a luxurious natural fiber. It contains lanolin, which provides natural protection. Woolen garments therefore don’t need to be washed as often as those made from other materials. It’s enough to store them properly, air them out frequently, and a quick pass with a steamer iron works well to refresh them.

Wool deserves this care. You’ll be rewarded with its durability, excellent performance, breathability, and natural temperature regulation.

If you do decide to wash wool, soak it in lukewarm water with a drop of wool-specific laundry gel. Do not distort the garment in any way after washing it this way. Simply use a towel to squeeze out the excess water and let it dry flat. A clothes drying rack works well, as it ensures airflow even from the underside.
